INTERVIEW: US based Gospel Singer Wura Grant Chats With Praiseworld Radio (via @PriscillaPWR)

Wura Grant

Wura Grant

Hello people, I Stumbled on this great song ‘There is a Name’ and I just could not resist the person behind the unique voice and inspiration- please meet my pretty, anointed new friend/special guest- Wura Grant. A CCM artist and has always loved to sing to the glory of God.

She graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and also completed a Master’s degree in Finance from Keller Graduate School in Atlanta, GA where she resides with her family.

Born in Nigeria to an African-American mother and a Nigerian father, Wura grew up in a household filled with love for the Lord and the joy of singing. Both her parents are graduates of Michigan State University, thus her desire to attend their Alma mater.

Her mother, a music teacher, has been her vocal coach from an early age. While growing up, Wura and her siblings heard everything from classical music by Bach to traditional Nigerian Music.

Her Single “There is a Name” is a testament that there is power in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Wura’s music is joyful, uplifting, inspiring, affirmative, exuberant, playful, and universal in its appeal. The message and ministry of Wura is abundant with love, faith, rhythm, and encouragement.

Her goal is to reach souls for Christ, encourage the brokenhearted and share the hope that we have in Jesus! She is currently working on her full album.

Priscilla – First of all, congratulations on your new single – ‘There is a name’ Please tell me where and why have you been hiding this great Voice?

Wura – Thank You so much! [Smiles] Hiding? [Laughing] It is God that can reveal your talent in His own time. I have been singing in choirs since I was 10 but it is only in 2013 that the desire came for me to “enlarge my territory”

Priscilla- Hummn! To be honest, when I saw your pretty face and the song title, I was playing the song in my head- trying to guess the style of your music, to my greatest shock; ‘Soft Rock’ was the last thing I was expecting to hear. Hence, you are on my A-list for pulling it off nicely. simple, powerful and satisfying {Laughs} So tell me about this song? What inspired it and what made you go for that genre of music?

Wura – Thanks for the kind words [smiles]. This song was an inspiration from God in my darkest hours. While on my way to the doctor one day and having gone through some challenges in my life, the chorus “In Jesus name, chains shall be broken, In Jesus name, burdens shall be lifted” came to me from the Holy Spirit based on the Bible verse, “At the Name of Jesus every knee must bow and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (Philippians 2:10) I knew instantly that I had to record the song because it ministered to me and I no longer felt the heaviness in my spirit.

Priscilla – Awesome! What an inspiration. So tell me just how you felt when you heard your song was #1 on the Christian Radio Chart and #5 on the Contemporary Christian Chart?

Wura – [smiles] Happy! I was checking my email one morning when I saw the message from the board congratulating me. I actually thought it was a spam email. I called my producer who confirmed that he had received the same message and it was being played on the Radio.

I give all the Glory to God because I know there are others out there hurting and He wants the song to lift their burdens just like it did mine.

Priscilla – I can just imagine. {Smiles} What do you do currently? Is it strictly music or otherwise? Also want to know what your next move is and what else we should expect from you; any Tour plans, Concert or Album Launch? Etc.

Wura- I am currently working as an Electrical Engineer/Strategic Sourcing Manager as well as equally pursuing my music at the same time. I am working on my album and I look forward to the release, so please stay tuned and follow me on Facebook! [Laughing]

Priscilla – Wow! Can’t wait to listen to your Album, watch out people! So tell me, how is singing in the US different from Nigeria for you and where you skeptical or nervous about people accepting your music?

Wura – I have been singing primarily in the US but I would definitely love to go to Nigeria and sing. [Smiles] Do I hear the phone ringing with an invitation to minister in Nigeria? [Laughing].

Priscilla interjects – Oh yeah! {Laughing} be expectant! You definitely will.

Wura {Continues} – I was not skeptical or nervous that my music would be embraced because I believe I have one audience and that is God. He has given me a message to His people and I must share it. I pray that my music will be well received and be a blessing to all.

Priscilla- Amen. Love and respect your confidence. Hummn! You know, an artist once told me how she forgot her lyrics on stage. {Laughing!} it happened to me too. Have you experienced that too?

Wura – Most definitely! [laughing] I was ministering once and forgot my lyrics on the second verse!!!! I began speaking in tongues [laughing] and when the rest came back to me I switched back to English. [Smiles]

Priscilla- Hahaha! Way to go girl! Good idea for all music ministers, just in case you find yourself in similar position. Warning!! Please don’t start suspecting singers onstage who suddenly switch to tongue-speaking. {Both Laughing hard} Could you tell us 5 things we don’t know about you?

Wura- I enjoy watching “Sophia the First” – a Disney cartoon; I can change my Car Tire in 20 minutes [smiles] I love designing my outfits for my ministrations “time permitting” [laughing], I volunteer with Child Fund, dedicated to helping children in need; and I LOVE reading mystery novels. [smiles]

Priscilla – Really?? Wow! {Mouth opening} @ Change the Car tire in 20mins! That is impressive. Now that’s a challenge, I shall beat you to that by 5mins. {Laughs!} Could you mention artiste{s} you’ve shared the stage with? {International and Nigerian}

Wura – I have had the opportunity to share the stage with Ron Kenoly, Hope Davies, Donn Thomas (Songwriter for “Anointing Fall on Me”), a song made famous by the great Ron Kenoly, Omega Levine and other anointed artistes.

Priscilla- Great! There something I call ‘my FantasyX’- which is to Act and Sing on a Tyler Perry Movie – setting in Nigeria-Amen! And probably do a duet with ‘India Arie’ {laughing so hard} please tell me what your ‘fantasyX’ is?’

Wura- [laughing] I guess it would be to have a duet with SINACH. [Smiles] Her music inspires me and I would love to minister at the next Experience Concert held in Lagos hosted by Pastor Paul Adefarasin of House on the Rock [laughing so hard]

Priscilla- Hummn! I really love your fantasyX. {Laughs!} Okay this is a personal Message to SINACH- ‘Dear Sinach, Wura Grant really wants to have a duet with you, she’s a serious fan of yours that is always inspired by you’ – there you go! – I’m sure she will read this interview or I would nicely ask my Boss [Tola] to deliver your message to SINACH.

And (clearing my throat) on your second fantasyX, there is nothing God cannot do, lol! After all, House on the Rock was my church before I relocated. {Wink wink!} Okay-Calling on the management team for ‘The Experience’ – please take note, or I will nicely ask ‘Nikky Laoye’ – who has mouth! [laughing}

Anyway, do you plan to visit Nigeria any time soon and would you honour an invitation to sing in Nigeria?

Wura – I would definitely honour an invitation to sing in Nigeria [smiles] I think that would make my dad proud and happy! That is my next step if granted the opportunity [smiles]

Priscilla – Dear People, Wura Grant is up for grabs and seriously you need to hear her single- There is a name! As to that effect, she has permitted me to add her contact here. Meaning to ask, is this your first time of hearing about Praiseworld Radio?

Wura – After doing my research about Praiseworld Radio, I am honored that you sought me out for the interview [smiles] I love it when there is an opportunity to propagate the gospel of Christ and I think Radio is a very important part of evangelism. SO THANK YOU PRAISEWORLD RADIO. [Smiles]

Priscilla – Awwwwh! {Blushing!} Our pleasure and you are most welcome.

Wura-I will also like to encourage that person that is wondering how they will pay that next bill or having difficulties in whatever area of their life. Just trust and believe that Christ died on the Cross for you and me and no matter what you face he took much more just for you! Rejoice!! It is a new day.. and this is your YEAR OF A NEW SONG.. [smiles]
