Dolly Parton shared in her new memoir how she thought about killing herself, but believes God intervened to stop her.
Dolly’s new memoir which is called ‘Dolly on Dolly’:’Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton’ reveals that she went through a difficult time of struggles, this led to her binge-eating and then she cheated on her husband.
She began to struggle with depression.Things were so bad that one night she brought out the gun she had kept for protection and began thinking about using it to kill herself but then her dog came up the stairs and tapped on her door:
“I looked at it a long time … then, just as I picked it up, just to hold it and look at it for a moment, out little dog, Popeye, came running up the stairs. The tap-tap of his paws jolted me back to reality, I suddenly froze. I put the gun down,”
“I kinda believe Popeye was a spiritual messenger from God. I don’t think I’d have done it, killed myself, but I can’t say for sure. Now that I’ve gone through that terrible moment, I can certainly understand the possibilities even for someone solid like me if the pain gets bad enough.”
That terrible experience opened her eyes to understand that God is real and with Him everything is possible:
“A belief in God is essential. You have to believe in something bigger than yourself. We grew up believing that through God all things are possible. I think I believed that so much that I made it happen.”
Dolly Parton now has a strong relationship with her husband of 51 years, Carl Dean and she has continued to tour and play music.
