On Saturday, May 21, 2016, Aimee’s Library held its monthly kids book club at Midas Play House, 36A Jaiye Oyedotun Street, Magodo GRA, Ikeja. This month, we had Award Winning Gospel Artiste, Kenny K’ore join the kids in a FUN- packed learning session from reading of the book for the month to learning of new words, and a spelling bee competition to cap up activities for the day.
So we planned a dramatic entrance and K’ore joined the kids in the Circle of Influence, refreshing their memories with his hit songs, “Somore” and “Halleluyah“…
Our kids know the songs and requested for them, but they weren’t sure the person before them was really him, so they watched until he hit that “K’ore pitch”… Lord have mercy!
The club was split amongst different age groups, the younger club kids spent their reading time with a Step Into Reading Math Reader Series – Mary Clare Likes To Share. The older group spent time with Roals Dahl’s Danny The Champion Of The World.
Our menu was loaded.. From the Reader’s Chair to learning new words, with their synonyms and then capping up the day’s activities with a Spelling bee competition. Now here’s the deal. On getting to the club, our boys took their corner of the room, leaving the girls to muster at another corner. And so we thought, why not make our spelling bee session a boys vs girls thing?
Funny ’cause our boys in the club thought they had found an ally and were coming up strong at the spelling bee… In their words, “No Amy.. No boys vs girls competition. ‘Cause girls always win!”
Guess what? It was a very close one as our GIRLS emerged hive queens with 2 solid points. It wasn’t funny though!
Hanging out with our star readers is always a lot of fun, and on this occasion of Children’s Day, we celebrate each and every one of them.
They have been of great influence and we kicked off their club just to bring out every best in them.
I guess I’ve just stepped into a generation that’s more tech-inclined, and addicted to Google that they’ve lost all the adventure from flipping pages to the easy-way-out system of learning.
We could gamble on any topic way back, pick up a theme and cook up an impromptu speech. We could debate for Africa! But my kids these days lean solely on Google or school curriculum. They have so little idea.
Right here at Aimee’s Library, we are dedicated to building a world of influence, one page at a time…
Over time, our kids club has
• Encouraged reading among kids of diverse learning standards.
• Made reading a social experience as well as an individual activity.
• Helped kids in developing verbal expression of ideas and feelings.
• Encouraged critical thinking.
• Helped kids develop the feeling of belonging to a group, being respected, and treating other group members with respect.
• Helped readers bond with others of like mind or different age groups.
• Created an opportunity to see literature in a new way amongst other advantages…
SPECIAL Shout out to our star readers, our special guest and his beautiful family..
So mark your calendars… Join us at our next read. You never know who will be interacting with the kids next.
