Song Title: Memeza (Let It Out)
Memeza (Let it out) is a song that speaks against gender-based violence and abuse against women.
Over the past few years, and more recently, we’ve resonated with stories that have made the headlines, such as Karabo Mokoena, Uyinene Mrwetyana and more recently the Mthwalume murders case.
Countless more didn’t make the headlines and we might never hear of them. With the COVID-19 pandemic in place, this exposed the added pressure on women who were now confided to spaces with their abusers. Recently a report stated that in SA GBV cases had risen by 500 percent since the start of the lockdown in March.
As a Christian, I know Jesus protected, empowered, publicly honoured, celebrated, respected and released the voice of women. Whether it was the company of women He kept in His ministry, or the Gentile woman at the well or the woman He spoke up for before others cast a stone on her.
Being a man too, I want to lend my voice to the social injustice women are facing with GBV globally. Too many times we’ve seen women pleading to have men alongside them fighting the battle and this needs to change.
I’d also like to encourage men to speak up if they are being abused emotionally or physically, to prevent carry it into the relationships they find themselves in.
