Ochuko Sifo

Most times we love associating or listening to famous people, celebrities or the winner of a competition or those at the fore front forgetting others. Today, my focus is on someone who wasn’t the winner or even close enough to the runner-up of a show; his large sweet personality, strength and perseverance despite his pains is commendable.

He is currently getting himself together abroad and strategizing. Please meet my guest: Ogheneochuko Sifo which means ” God is my pillar of strength

Ochuko is a gifted performer whose love for music started at the tender age of 9 years old which launched him early into the world of music. In July 2010, he participated in the Project Fame West Africa and emerged one of the top 6 out of tens of thousands of people that auditioned for the show all over West Africa.

During the Project Fame show, he wowed audiences with his sultry voice and professional performance  Ochuko’s passion for music was fuelled through his role as a lead singer in his church choir and he returned to his early love for music.

The Project Fame platform projected him to the limelight and marked the evolution of Ochuko as not just a singer, songwriter but also as a performer set to take African R&B to new heights. He quickly overcame many trails and is currently working to become an artist in demand in the Nigerian music scene with the release of his single ‘GET UP’ coming before the end of November 2011.

Ochuko has since the release of his debut single in 2011, released 4 singles titled “True Love” “Orekelewa” and his Love song “Ama ka shey Mena” (My Angel) which premiered in December 2012. Also, Ochuko recently released his first gospel song titled “The Reason I Live” which premiered in December 2012.

He  featured the works of artists like Dr Sid, Eric Arubayi, Trybesmen, TyBello and the late Jaiye Aboderin; he has also done voice over skits for the late beloved Keffe. Ochuko also nurtures his other creative streak as part owner of Oma-Ogbu & Associates, a family horticulture business. He is Humble, Playful, Committed, Emotional and Focused.

Ochuko In Chosen Treasure Choir:

As one of the Lead singers in Chosen Treasure (now LMGC: Lagos Metropolitan Gospel Choir) I learnt to be more appreciative of the talent, gifts and good people I was privileged to meet and learn from. Being in a choir so large and having to climb up the ranks to a lead singer only made me realize more and more that, to be called a lead singer is not just a position but a responsibility.

CHALLENGES

The first challenge I had as a lead vocalist in the choir was the snide and ridiculous  remarks of people saying “He is only a lead singer because he was on a reality show” and I want to clear that by saying this….”Long before I went on that show, I knew I had a calling on my life to sing, but did not embrace or know the depth of  the calling until after the show.”I told my superiors (Pastors)  before going off for auditions and asked for their blessings and I can only thank God that I did that. For me, the show was just a show and coming out gave me a sense of coming of age to embrace my true calling. But as it always happens for some, I lost my way and lingered in the secular (as we Nigerians like to call it) radar for a while with the false belief that I had arrived when my journey was just about scratching the surface. As time went by, I literally felt the distraction and the difference between being in a world I had come to understand to be a farce and the world where people  actually need  help, salvation and the desire for favor in God’s eyes. Being in the choir gave me a sense of discipline on how to handle myself in the secular world  especially when people tried to use my words against me. I released a few single before now and I can tell you that they were not gospel but relevant to things that happen to everyday people.

Ochuko In Project Fame: Season 3

(sighs) My audition felt like the longest day of my life as it felt like I was in a group that refused to be sent home that day(LOL) I remember these 2 guys giving me note for note, song for song and I won’t forget the look on their faces when it was clear that I won the battle based on my music knowledge and choice of songs that showcased my voice perfectly.

Ochuko In Project Fame- Season 3

I remember being there and calling my best friend Eric Arubayi of (West African Idol) and asking him silly questions like “how high do you think I should sing? Or If it was okay to sing a female song” He would give the most discouraging answers and make me laugh by saying things like “if you like, sing old mama’s song that they don’t know” but seriously the one thing he told me then that always brought me back was “Ochuko, you are one of the few people I know that can give me the lyrics of songs that  I don’t even know about and when you sing it, people around me are like- “that song is classic”…Infact, he makes me feel that I know songs more than he does (LOL) but he was there for me before I went in for the show and attended  the shows as well…{sigh} Hummn! Good times.

Project Fame opened my eyes to a whole new world. I saw a side of entertainment that made me realize that most of the things we see today on Television is not madness, but pure creativity and something to keep people at the edge of their seats…I didn’t feel bad for not winning because I told myself that I would stay till the end of that show and make my friends and most importantly my family proud and I did both. The show helped me confirm that regardless of size, height, or whatever,  I am capable of doing anything if I put my mind to it. Not that I was planning on doing anything hilarious but every single class i took was worth it and I apply those laws till today.

Ochuko and “THE REASON I LIVE”
The reason I live was inspired by my late sisters (RIP) Voke Daniel(Mrs) and Aminone Kessiena Sifo. I can’t tell you the sleepless nights I had at first losing the eldest Voke (due to an ailment misunderstood by the doctors) and my baby sister (Aminone) in the same year to sickle cell anemia.

Knowing that I had lost so much in one year broke me as a person and put my family in a state of depression. I mean these were not strangers but my greatest critics and the reason I pushed myself to be a better performer, entertainer and all in all a better artiste.

A year went by and I put myself together and contacted a producer by the name L37 currently with a label called Loopy music and we rubbed minds on the concept I had for a song and how I wanted to dedicate it to my sisters.

Truth be told, as soon as I heard the beat, I knew what the song title would be because my sisters had always told me that, “if you are going to live your life to the fullest, then make it count by allowing God to be first in all that you do“…..and it came to me to do a song that gives thanks to him and acknowledging that I had been through good and bad times  but he remains God and my life is in his hands.

Today I can say that the song will mark the start of a movement even when the video is shot and put out there for unbelievers to see what God can do with your pain.

I turned mine to words of encouragement and just so you know the following year I lost my dad and mom which I thought was the end for me but I am glad that I was able to talk with them both before it happened and got a lot from them to keep me going hard and strong for God.

Ochuko SONGS

Hmmmmmmmm! Ochuko has secular songs and I will tell you what I have told people in the past and will continue to tell them in the future. My supposed secular songs talk about LOVE and not SEX!! They display a sense of creativity in playing with words and not a sense of playing with women.

Also, my supposed songs talk about things that happen in actual relationships and doesn’t encourage casual encounters with the opposite sex. There is nothing wrong with appreciating  people for their God giving gift and we need to clear our heads and look at the big picture and not limit ourselves to petty things.

I’m so proud that I was able to write those songs and get people’s attention and in the nearest future I will write even better songs in Jesus name.

Ochuko’s PAINS

My greatest pains to this day is losing my sisters and parents in a span of 2 years consecutively.

You don’t pray such on a human being but I tell you that what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger and a better person and reminds you that there is life after this flesh and blood we inhabit. So I choose to live wisely and let God have his way with me.

Ochuko’s ACHIEVEMENTS

I was recently acknowledged as an ambassador to my University (Babcock University) and I endorsed this years alumni homecoming for all ex members of babcock university.
