ABOUT “DANIEL”
Set in ancient Babylon about 537BC. The play DANIEL re-enacts d political intrigues that saw to Daniel’s eventual rise to the position of Prime Minister. The playwright takes us on a journey that shows the intricate web of deception plotted by the Charming HAJITHA – queen to DARIUS – the totalitarian and sovereign ruler of Babylon.
Darius had granted oversight functions to three officials namely NIMRI -a brutish war lord who is portrayed as all brawn’s and no brains SATALA- a crafty lobbyist, word smith and astute politician with eyes on the throne. DANIEL- Hebrew slave who distinguished himself through excellent service. A man of impeccable judgement and incorruptible in all his doings.
Hajitha on learning about d king’s plan to appoint Daniel as Chief Minister, plots with the duo of Satala and Nimri to depose Daniel. They found occasion to turn the king against Daniel when they, appealing to Darius’ hubris proposed to honor him more than any king had ever been honored.
In their proposition the king is to be deified and worshiped as a god. Their plan was simple. Having found that the only way Daniel could be ensnared would be in regard to his God. They enticed the king through his pride, deceiving him to sign an irrevocable decree stating that the king alone wil worshipped in the space of 30days. Breach of this law was a crime punishable by death.
Satala and Nimri managed to convince the king to sign the decree in Daniel’s absence and Daniel was greeted with the news upon arrival from a journey embarked on in the king’s stead. Shaken but unyielding, Daniel continued in his practice of praying to his God, playing right into the waiting arms of his enemies who eargerly reported their findings to the king.
Fazed upon realizing that he had been used, the King tried in vain to get Daniel to relinquish his religious stance. Finally the King is forced to cast Daniel to the lions den. The exciting addition to the action is the chess master and puppeteer pulling the strings-Queen Hajitha.
With the outward look of one who cannot hurt a fly, she is actually the mastermind behind the entire plot! She had tried seducing Daniel but failed and chose Satala instead. She deceived Satala into thinking her love for him was the driving force behind her actions when in fact, she planned to take the king’s shield-Daniel out of the picture. Then she would have the freedom to use Nimri to assasinate the king while Satala is used to apprehend Nimri for his crime.
Hajitha plots to also kill Satala in the long run to become Monarch of Babylon. Her plan unfortunately fails when the king sneaks up on her and her lover- Satala, over hears all her dastardly schemes and enraged casts all three conspirators to the lions den. Daniel on the other hand, comes out unharmed as his God sent an angel to shut the mouth of the lions.
